Not-So-French Toast

Difficulty: Easy

Serves four

Yesterday a non vegan friend of mine mentioned he had French toast for breakfast. I thought to myself “why can’t I have some French toast?!” It turns out I can and now so can you, all you need are some kitchen staples and a rumbling stomach in waiting.

  • 1 1/4 cups soy milk
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1 tablespoon caster sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 loaf of bread, thickly sliced (any kind you like, I used sourdough)

  1. Pour soy milk and flour into a mixing bowl and stir with a fork until only small lumps remain.
  2. Stir in sugar and cinnamon.
  3. Soak the bread in the batter for about 5 minutes, two slices at a time. In the meantime, heat a thin layer of olive oil in a frypan.
  4. Carefully add the bread to the frypan and cook on high until one side is golden. Flip and cook until the other side is golden as well.
  5. Once cooked, serve your toast with whatever accoutrements you desire such as golden syrup or facon.

Bon Appetit!

    This looks dope!

  • Beth

This was delicious! I thought French toast was off the menu for life, but thankfully not. Every bit as good as the original, and very easy to make. Thank you!

  • Leeyah

Lady, Can you please add more to the breakfast menu?

  • Kimberley

Right now I am listening to the boyfriend attempting to make something that hopefully resembles pancakes in the kitchen. Your recipes make me feel unfaithful.

    • Chelsey

Hahaha! Don’t worry, Kimberley, I can keep a secret.

  • Laura

I just made this for breakfast… Omg. I’d never had French toast before I went vegan so I really didn’t know what to expect, but my boyfriend (who isn’t vegan) reckons this is better than the “real thing”. Best. Breakfast. Ever. Thank you! 🙂

    • Chelsey

Ohhhh, thanks Laura! I love to hear this kind of feedback. So glad you and your boyfriend enjoyed it 🙂
