If you follow me on Twitter you’ll know that I often whinge about the lack of vegan options in the Newcastle area. In saying that, they are around and shortly I’ll be putting together my Like a Vegan Guide to Newcastle for you to sink your teeth into. One of the places that will feature on the list is Momo Wholefoods Cafe in East Maitland. It’s a bit of a drive from Newcastle, about 40 minutes but also a great option if you’re visiting the Hunter Valley also, plus it’s worth the journey.

The cafe itself is based inside the Organic Feast grocery store (I’ll review that at another time) and has a large inside eating area as well as outdoor seating. The staff are lovely and the crowd is chilled out with a very family friendly atmosphere.

The menu comprises of organic treats, with a stack of vegan stuff on the menu. The specials change regularly but their standard menu is very extensive. Polenta slice, salads, pies, curries and burgers are just some of the ace vegan options for you to enjoy here. They serve breakfast too, righteous!

I try to get out to Momo at least once a month to grab lunch and pick up some groceries. On this occasion I decided to try a new menu item, the Vegan Plate ($17.50)

The plate consisted of wholemeal toast with avocado, mushrooms, salad, beetroot and some vegan cheese. It was great, such a nice selection of items for a Saturday lunch. The locally sourced, organic produce makes all the difference – that avocado was bitchin! The vegan cheese was smooth and flavoursome and with a squeeze of lemon juice you get a bit more tang.

I was so full from the lunch I didn’t get a dessert but I’ve had them before and they’re delicious.

If you’re planning a trip to the Hunter, add Momo Wholefood Cafe to your list of places to eat. Make a day of it and visit the awesome Maitland Gaol, Maitland Regional Art Gallery and the nearby country town, Morpeth.
