I stopped wearing leather not long after I became vegetarian, so it’s been about 15 years since I’ve bought a leather bag. Over the years I’ve always struggled to find good quality, yet affordable vegan accessories but lately a few dope options have been popping up on the scene and I couldn’t be more pumped!
One of those brands is L. Yucel, a new vegan accessory brand dedicated to creating top quality, ethically conscious handbags. Designer Leyla Yucel knows her stuff too! She’s worked with Kate Spade, Charlotte Ronson and Ralph Lauren but is now creating her own brand that sits in-line with her personal values – yay!
These bags are made from polyurethane or PU, a PVC and leather alternative that’s mostly biodegradable and much kinder to Mother Naytch. Plus their manufacturer was chosen due to their excellent standing with BSCI, who develop and implement systems for improving work conditions in the global supply chain, meaning workers get taken care of too.
Leyla sent me a couple of L. Yucel’s brand new bags to take for a spin; the Kiki Purse and the Lucky Wallet in Heart Hands. They both look dope and you can certainly feel the high quality of the materials the minute you touch ’em. The Kiki is obvs one for the cat-lovers out there with its polished gold-tone kitty ears and removable strap. It fits most of the stuff you need for a night out but beware if your phone is bigger than an iPhone 5C!
The Lucky Wallet is my fave of the two because it easily converts from a wristlet to a wallet and has some super handy features like the easy access card slot on the outside and multiple compartments on the inside. The awesome embossed heart hand detail on the front takes this wallet from a basic black cash carrier to a real fashion accessory (my iPhone 7 Plus fits in there too. JUST!)
You may be thinking that $75 USD is a fair chunk of change to fork out for a bag or wallet but when you consider the design, the fabrics and the ethically conscious thought behind the products, spending the extra cash really is worth it. I’ve been using my Heart Hands Wallet every day for over a month now and it still looks as new as the day I unwrapped it!
